On the evening of 9 May 2023, Newcastle Unitarians, Newcastle Progressive Christian Network, and Christian CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) held a Peace Workshop at Brunswick Methodist Church in Newcastle City Centre.Liddy Buswell from Christian CND gave a thought-provoking discussion of the current worldwide nuclear situation, why Christian CND is opposed to nuclear weapons, and what we can do. We had a group discussion about the issues raised, in which people discussed the difficult issue of how nations can defend themselves in a world where dictatorships have access to nuclear weapons, whether possessing such weapons can ever be morally justified, and to what extent our doing so is guided by necessity, or by profit and the urge to dominate the world. Some felt that nuclear weapons are a symptom of an unequal world with no easy way to negotiate with autocratic regimes; others thought that the sheer destructive potential of nuclear weapons meant that unilateral disarmament was the best option. It was an extremely thought-provoking session, and many thanks to Liddy for her talk, and to NPCN and Brunswick Methodist Church for hosting it.
