In Support of Black Lives Matter Unitarianism as a movement and Newcastle upon Tyne Unitarians as a congregation oppose racism and support human equality. Non-conformist congregations in the Northeast (Unitarians, Methodists, Quakers) have a strong history of opposing racism and slavery. One of our past ministers, William Turner (1761-1859) was a prominent anti-slavery campaigner and helped set up the first regional anti-slavery society. As a movement, we support open and respectful discussion, and we have recently been exploring the issues of race, racism and privilege – if you’d like to read more on this, see Unitarian Minister Rev. Winnie Gordon’s theme talk at Hucklow, with two articles on the issue in our magazine The Inquirer (here and here). If you need to report hate crimes, here is a link to Newcastle’s system: Stop Hate.
