Newcastle Unitarians: Prayers and Marching at Northern Pride 2023
For the second time, Newcastle upon Tyne Unitarians marched at Northern Pride in the middle of Newcastle, although this time it was considerably more rainy! Firstly, we joined other people of faith for an inclusive prayer meeting at St James’ URC church in the city centre, organised by Rev. Ryan Sirmons (St James URC) and Rev. Kai Miller (Northern Lights Metropolitan City Church). It was a very moving experience and we were thankful to have joined them.

After that, it was time for the march itself! Marchers from all across the north gathered on Ceremonial Way outside Newcastle’s Civic Centre, defying the rain to wave banners and dress like colourful birds. (Except for the Newcastle Leathermen, who mostly dress in black leather, unsurprisingly.) We joined up with Northern Lights, and after a short wait, we were off around the city centre, marching down the main street, Northumberland Street, past Grey’s Monument and along the streets up to the Town Moor where the Pride Festival was being held. It rained throughout, but we just sang the chorus to “Livin’ on a Prayer” even louder. The unity and fellowship on display was something to behold. We were honoured to be part of it.
