Sunday Service 26th July 2020

Online event: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88429127653
“All are welcome to join us at our Flower Communion. This year, I am asking everyone to bring the ‘flowers of your heart’. What that means is that I’d like everyone to think of a value that means something important to your wellbeing and, if you can, have an flower (real or fake is fine) or an object with you to represent it. If you don’t get chance to do this before the service, we’ll have time to do it during the service, so don’t worry.

A value very important to my wellbeing right now is friendship, so I will have with me a ‘Forever Friends’ rose from my garden, from a rosebush given to me by my best friend. It doesn’t have to be a flower – if you’d like to bring a cup of tea to symbolise perseverance, that’s fine too! Or you can print out a picture of a flower, draw one, or just write what you value in big letters on a piece of paper.
We’ll then share our values as a congregation, and I’ll write them down. (People can share by speaking the value aloud, holding it up to the camera if you’re comfortable having the camera on during the call, putting it in the chat, or telling me in advance and I’ll read it for you. You can tell us about it in detail if you want to, but you don’t have to if you’d prefer not.)

At the end of the service, instead of swapping flowers, we’ll swap the flowers of our hearts, and each take away a gift from a fellow member of the congregation.

So, this is a bit of an experiment, but I hope you’ll join with me to see if it works! We’ll also have readings, hymns, music, time for prayer and contemplation, and a short meditation. I’ve sent out the readings and prayers to members of our congregation who are not on Zoom, so they can share in our worship in their homes. Any questions? Post email here and let me know: info@newcastleunitarians.org.uk.”

And an announcement, sadly:

“A former member of our congregation and friend of our church, Fiona Tait, passed away in St. Oswald’s Hospice at the end of last week. Her son and sister were with her. We will pass on details of funeral arrangements and any collection in her name to everyone in due course.
One thing the family have asked for: Paola (Fiona’s sister) is hoping to put together a slideshow to remember Fiona with pictures and / or quotes. She asks: “Please send me photos of you and Fi that are meaningful to you. If you have any song suggestions for a playlist, those will also be gratefully received, we’ll try to fit as many in as we can.” If you have contributions for this, you can send them to Paola at: paola_howard@yahoo.com.
My Flower Communion service for this Sunday will be based on the one that Fiona and Helen led in August 2014, which was the first Flower Communion service held at Newcastle upon Tyne.
Yours with love and fellowship,
Louise Reeve
Chairperson, Newcastle upon Tyne Unitarians.”
